Farmers & Merchants Bank Celebrates Valued Client’s 100th Birthday
September 07, 2017
Farmers & Merchants Bank (F&M Bank) celebrated the 100th birthday of Bob Hayden, a valued client for over 5 years.
F&M’s San Clemente office, at 621 N. El Camino Real, played host to Mr. Hayden’s 100th birthday celebration on Thursday afternoon. F&M employees, clients and friends of Mr. Hayden all attended the festivities. He was celebrated with a cake, a sparkling cider toast, a special letter of thanks from F&M Executives and a “Happy Birthday” song from the crowd.
F&M Bank Chairman of the Board and CEO, Daniel K. Walker said “It is truly a special honor for all of us here at F&M to have the privilege of serving a client like Mr. Hayden.”
Robert C. Hayden was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania in 1917, only 10 years after F&M Bank was founded. Shortly after, his family moved to Long Beach, CA where his father began banking at Farmers & Merchants in 1918. As a child he joined the Boy Scouts, delivered newspapers, starred on the church basketball and baseball teams and played football at Wilson High School. After earning the rank of Eagle Scout, Bob attended junior college and then UCLA studying Finance. Upon graduation, he was employed at Douglas Aircraft in the Finance department, before enlisting in the US Army in 1942 to fight in WWII. When Bob returned to California a WWII veteran, he moved to San Clemente and purchased a small accounting business. He settled down and married a mother of six, whose youngest two children lived in their home. Even today, after the death of his wife and the children full-grown, Bob counts both of them as his own. Today, Bob has been married to his wife Carol for 40 years with five grown children between the two of them.
Some of Bob’s accolades include a stint as city planning commissioner whose work on a Blue Ribbon Committee helped get the city through trying economic times in the 1990s. As a career accountant with longstanding service with the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce, he was involved with library renovation, a new senior center, Courtney’s Sandcastle playground, the Boys & Girls Club, Family Assistance Ministries and multiple philanthropic causes. And recently, Bob was recognized by the Boy Scouts as the oldest Eagle Scout in Orange County and was added to the prestigious San Clemente Wall of Recognition.
Scot Proud, Vice President and Relationship Manager at F&M Bank said “Bob truly embodies one of F&M’s founding principles of Service Above Self.”
Bob still drives around town as part of his daily routine and attends weekly Rotary meetings. He has been a loyal client at Farmers & Merchants Bank since 2012.
