Farmers & Merchants Bank Celebrates 100 Years in East Long Beach Zaferia Neighborhood

Farmers & Merchants Bank’s first branch location at 3140 E. Anaheim St.in Long Beach, circa 1921.
LONG BEACH, CA (September 10, 2021) - Farmers & Merchants Bank (F&M Bank) will celebrate 100 years of service to the East Long Beach Community on September 15, 2021. Originally opened in September of 1921 to accommodate the oil boom in Signal Hill, F&M Bank opened its first branch office, outside the Pine Avenue flagship location, at the corner of Obispo Avenue and Anaheim Road in the heart of a little village that had once been called “Zaferia.” Originally called the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Southern Counties, then renamed Farmers and Merchants Bank of Long Beach (Zaferia Branch), it was finally renamed as the East Long Beach branch.
In celebration of the occasion, there will be in-branch festivities from September 13 – 17, including the opportunity to guess how much money is in the jar for your chance to win what’s inside, as well as photo opportunities. No purchase or account opening is necessary to enter or win. 100th Anniversary-themed treats will be available on September 15th, while supplies last.
Existing in this location for 100 years, this bank branch has been witness to a great deal of history. In 1933, Long Beach suffered a devastating earthquake, causing significant damage to the F&M Bank building. Some of the outside walls were damaged beyond repair, with the second floor apartments experiencing the greatest damage. Gus A. Walker, second generation President of Farmers & Merchants Bank, stepped into action. He first verified that the vault door could be opened, realizing that local residents and businesses would require cash in order to repair their own homes and purchase supplies and food. At his own risk, he entered the Red Tag building, pulled out desks, and set them up outside as bank teller windows in order to accommodate the needs of the local community. The building was rebuilt and reopened, only to be torn down in the 1960s and replaced with the current building.
“Difficult times bring out the best in people,” said Daniel K. Walker, F&M Bank Chairman of the Board and CEO. “We are extremely proud of our history and our century-old resiliency to keep our clients’ money safe and provide the service and attention they have come to expect. Most important, we are humbled to have served the East Long Beach community for more than 100 years.”
