Farmers & Merchants Bank Awarded $25,000 Grant to Support More Second Chances in South County

October 06, 2021

LONG BEACH, CA (October 6, 2021) - Farmers & Merchants Bank (F&M Bank) collaborated to obtain $25,000 in grant funding from the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco’s 2021 AHEAD Program to support programs at Second Chance Orange County. The AHEAD Program enables FHLBank San Francisco members to give a critical boost to local programs and projects that target pressing community needs.

Awarded for their job training program, Second Chance Orange County provides job and life skills training to low-income clients recovering from drug and alcohol addictions, many of whom are homeless, formerly incarcerated, and/or living with mental and physical disabilities. This project will target clients in the underserved Southern Orange County area through a partnership with a local homeless shelter to provide job skills training and placement as well as outreach and training for potential employer partners. AHEAD will pay for staff and materials as well as incentives for clients.

“We couldn’t have moved to help the most under-served in South Orange County without this much-needed funding from the FHLB,” said Deb Johnson, Second Chance Orange County Founder & Executive Director. “We are very excited and grateful for this opportunity."

“Thank you to our friends at the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco for making this wonderful program available via its member banks,” said Cheryl Ryman, F&M Bank Vice President, Community Reinvestment Act Officer. “We congratulate Second Chance Orange County on this grant award. This organization is a valuable asset to our community and we are grateful for the opportunity to assist in achieving their mission.”

“This project is a comprehensive approach to moving Second Chance Orange County clients into meaningful employment, with job training, placement services, and outreach to potential employers,” said Marietta Núñez, Senior Vice President and Community Investment Officer at FHLBank San Francisco. “We are pleased to partner with our member F&M Bank to support this vital organization and the people it serves.”

FHLBank San Francisco is a member-driven cooperative helping local lenders in Arizona, California, and Nevada build strong communities, create opportunity, and change lives for the better.
